Winter Fire Safety

Our thoughts and prayers go out to those affected by the fires in Los Angeles. Here are some suggestions to stay safe this winter:

Chimney and Vent Maintenance: Have your chimney and vents inspected and cleaned by a professional each year before using your fireplace. This helps prevent chimney fires caused by creosote buildup.

Space Heaters Safety: If you use space heaters, plug them directly into an outlet and never use an extension cord. Keep them at least three feet away from anything that can burn, such as furniture, curtains, and bedding.

Carbon Monoxide Alarms: Install carbon monoxide alarms in your home and test them at least once a month. Carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless gas that can be produced by faulty heating systems.

Holiday Lights: When decorating with holiday lights, use lights that are certified for safety and check for any frayed wires or broken bulbs. Avoid overloading electrical outlets with too many decorations.

Ash Disposal: If you have a fireplace, make sure to store cooled ashes in a tightly covered metal container and place it at least 10 feet away from your home or any nearby buildings. Ashes can retain heat and potentially start a fire if not handled properly.
