A cold forecast could mean the Tobyhanna Ice Harvest is back on for the first time since 2022.
Uncooperative weather led to unprecedented back-to-back cancelations in 2023 and 2024, but Arctic air is expected to plunge southward this January. As of Thursday night, the National Weather Service was forecasting highs in the 20s in Tobyhanna for Friday through Wednesday, Jan. 8, and a high near 19 on Jan. 9. Looking further ahead, temperatures are likely to be below normal in northeast Pennsylvania and much of the eastern United States from Jan. 10 to 16, according to the eight- to 14-day outlook issued by the National Weather Service Climate Prediction Center on Thursday.
The harvest is set to begin at 9 a.m. on Saturday, January 25.
Organized by the Leonard and Saxe families and financially supported by the Coolbaugh Township Historical Association, the event demonstrates how ice was historically harvested and stored in the Poconos.
